I can't say what I really, really want to say....but I was raised by a Mother that thought more about animals than she did about most people...I think I would have probably gone to jail before that fawn left that property...What you all did was the right way...I just don't always do things as they are supposed to be done...The officers should have used personal judgement, looked around, and said they will be back in a couple days...ignoring bad laws is more humane...and the officers should be ashamed of themselves...grown men should be able to make better decisions even if it goes against the law...idk...I'm sorry for Dasher...

This is outrageous! How in today's world is this even allowable or acceptable??? Don't stop being good people and doing the right thing. However, I'd fight to the end of time to get this law changed. One way to do it is raise this with PETA! That will get a lot of attention.

Im just a "drive by commenter" here... i would fight that until all efforts were exhausted. Laws such as the one you are referring to in this instance are the kind of laws that need changed. Get a good lawyer, and fight it.

When did the law, become GOD?! These officers should be ashamed, they could have “guided” you saying, “ you had already put it in the woods, by your house, before they got there.” Wink, wink. This is just sad! I have found three baby fawns on our property in the last month. One fawn, I did the same as you because coyotes took off the twin the night before, seen on our trail camera. The mama gave birth near our camera and didn’t move the second fawn, after the first one was taken by coyotes. Mama had the second fawn, then ran off. The next morning I found fawn in the same spot, very dehydrated. We brought it in for the night, I fed it goats colostrum, and put it back where I found it, the next morning. Mama came back shortly after and moved it to a safer place. We saw the fawn and mama again, on our other trail camera the next day, so I know the fawn was doing good. I am sorry your hearts are hurting. 🙏🏼

I don't know about La. But many states have a program where you can be certified to rehab wildlife. You may be able to qualify. I see no reason why Deer should not be a part of that program. Your Senator John Kennedy is a great guy and you may be able to get him involved. Most LEO's are good people and would prefer to do what's right rather than what's legal. These sound like guys who got into wildlife management for the right reason. I can see not rehabbing venomous snakes and wild hogs but to euthanize a small harmless animal is just wrong in my heart and mind.

This law was likely meant to protect animals and instead it has been turned on its head. This is insanity! You’re not over reacting.

Those officers absolutely had discretion. They could have very easily just put the fawn on the ground and say it wiggled free and hit the woods. That's just like police officers who always write tickets and make arrests just because they pulled someone over.

Y’all did the best thing you could do. I am an avid hunter and I have passed on so many deer just because they had fawns. Contact local reps and push very hard and get hunting organizations behind you. We care about these types of things. Good luck and God bless you!

You are great people for doing the right thing. It's unfortunate what has happened .I would take that ticket and challenge it in court, and say your piece . You did the right thing not the wrong . In law a wrong must have been done . LAW = L and A ir W ater . These three elements belong to the creator and so do you ,you are a co-creator and you did the right thing ,there was no injured party . That was a sad story, I see how deer can be a nuisance. I would of just issued a fine, educated, and looked the other way about taking the baby deer from them. Really sad, just to be human and have some compassion.

Y'all did the right thing by being honest. About 2 years ago I saw a fawn in the road. It was trying to get across the road so I stopped to make sure it did not get hit by a car. I stayed about 30 ft from it I called a retired game Warden and he explained that the mothers leave the babies bed down and she walks off, because the babies do not have a smell therefore predators don't find them as easily. I did stop a couple of cars and the baby got across the ditch for a few minutes and then it moved up the hill, encountered a tree limb and laid back down. But at least it was out of the road. As far as the person who reported you, somehow I would make sure that they knew the game wardens had to euthanize. With the story the officers told you about the other dear they couldn't touch because it was in the person's backyard, it does look like they would have allowed you to take the baby outside and they could have written their report accordingly. I can't help but think about how many drunk drivers and drug users get stopped and then turned loose without any repercussion. Check North Carolina four rules about rehabilitation. Don't stop being don't stop being honest decent people.

That is a stupid law. You cannot rehabilitate the baby deer. Crazy. That law needs to be changed. You have been given an assignment from up above. To fight for the innocent and helpless animals. This is a hard journey. I hope you succeed.

A sad situation and probably a very old law? Defiantly needs a law change . Many other states , in tv shows even , Texas, NH , Maine etc they always take animals , birds etc to rehabilitated all the time . I’m sure your local senator /reps would want to be behind a feel good change to the rehabbing law! FYI, in FLorida rehabbing is not allowed for non native animals like pigeons, bowconstrictor snakes etc. Maybe a white tail is non-native????? As a retired game warden with twenty six years of service, been in this situation many times. Oklahoma does have certified rehab centers we took the deer. All officers do have discretion on what citations and/or warnings they write. You did the right thing but made the wrong call without knowing. God bless …

As crooked as the State of LA is in so many other ways in govt and other areas, I would be willing to bet that even this same situation has happened before and the deer lived and was not taken somewhere to be put down in the past but since there was a neighbor involved here, it put these officers in a different place, if they would not have taken it then they might lose their job because if the neighbor was silly enough to turn you in, I bet they are watching around the corner to see if he was taken and would have caused a scene if they had not taken him away. One thing I would do or bust trying, I would rescue another one, put a collar on it and leave it outside and show it in every video you make as a "still wild" animal and hope the neighbor sees the video and calls again for them to come out and not be able to do anything about because it is still wild😁😁😁 What is the point of having Fish and Wildlife officers if they are not willing to protect the wildlife at all cost, it is their job and duty to do so and why that department was created for in the first place. You have not over-reacted in any way and without trying to transport it across state lines, there is nothing wrong with helping it, it was still in the wild as far out as you guys are. It is a shame that regulations like this were even thought of and another reason we need to vote in change in every public office!!!

My heart hurts for you guys in this situation. I can hear the passion in your voices. You are NOT overreacting. Sounds like to me that there is an opportunity to rewrite the law to provide for exception cases such as what happened in this case. There are cases just like this that make sense for an exception to the law. You guys are great folks. You did the right thing in this case even though it had dire circumstances for this fawn. Thank you for sharing this story. Keep doing what you do. This story will capture the hearts and minds of so many others. Change will come because of this, I promise!

Wow! That’s an incredible story. Just like the Gestapo coming to take Jews away, when someone comes to do evil, you are not obligated to speak the whole truth. God’s law of protecting the innocent outweigh your obligation to speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I believe you would have been morally justified to release the fawn into your backyard and said you do not have a deer in your possession. The law is meant to keep people from owning, raising, and breeding tame deer. A crime must include criminal intent, which you did not have. You could probably fight this in court, but definitely the law needs to be changed to reflect the nuances involved that permeate this particular situation. I am discussed about this and so sad for you and the little fawn. Be at peace.

I'm a native of Florida, I have lived on and all around Eglin AFB, in NW Florida (between Pensacola & Panama City). This may be lengthy but I want to share with y'all what choices we have in our state and surrounding area to give y'all some thoughts on what you may want to present and push your state to do, if possible. I think Y'all would be perfect for starting a Wildlife Refuge Center, right there on y'all's property, of course with permission from y'all's state to do so. Look into finding out if y'all can do that, find an animal vet that will back you up and be an on-call vet for your center, and get a petition going to start one and take what you have and present it to your representative of your district and state. As my dad always told me, "Squeaky wheel gets the oil." Make them LISTEN to you. Y'all.dont know unless you try everything has started from somenone not giving up. If they let y'all a wildlife facility, name it after him, Dasher Wildlife Refuge Center! Goosebumps! Back to NW FL, whenever an animal is captured we can either call the Wildlife Refuge Center in Destin FL (it is a small facility but they do work with FWC and Jackson Guard unit with Eglin AFB who specialize in our wildlife and ecosystems) and ask if they can take the animal. If it is safe for you and the animal, and WRC can take the animal, you can transport it to their facility and they will take responsibility from there. However, if they are full and do not have the room or resources to care for the animal you contact FWC (yes you can call FWC first if you want) and usually the FWC will contact Eglin AFBs Wildlife Conservation unit aka Jackson Guard located in Niceville, FL. a few miles away. Jackson Guard can be called on for any animal at anytime by FWC, civilians can call during public operating hours. Jackson Guard will take any animal any time whether it be a black bear or wild boar to a chipmunk or a squirrel. WFC and Jackson Guard will treat them accordingly and release them. Jackson Guard will tag and release an animal onto the base's reservation which is almost 464,000 acres that spans across several counties in NW FL. The downfall: Developers and wildlife. Developers are taking over so much area to build neighborhoods and beach condos that animals are ran out of their habitats causing people to experience daily encounters with black bears and deer. They are running out of food sources and are going into peoples gardens and eating whatever viable source of food they may have: garbage cans, their lawns, flower beds etc. Jackson Guard has a three 'strikes your out' rule (I know with bears they do because of their potential danger to humans but what are we to them??) When a bear is caught he is tranquilized treated examined etc if he is well, they tag his ear and release him on the resv. If he wanders back to the city he is captured and relocated again. If he is captured a third time he is considered a nuissance and is euthanized. Sad but at least they do give the animals a chance. Animals that cannot be released back into the wild are sometimes kept at Jackson Guards "animal sanctuary" at the Niceville location. It is like a mini zoo. They have vibrant life but cannot adapt or defend themselves and they will keep them there for the remainder of their lives. Which I appreciate a lot for them doing that. Just for GPs Jackson Guard is where civilians go to get their Eglin AFB Reservation hunting and fishing license to hunt and fish on Eglins reservations. Ironic huh? Well I am in total agreeance with y'all and I will be the first one to advocate and do whatever I can from here to help you achieve justice for Dasher and for the animals they God Forbid fall into his situation. Become a Louisana State Wildlife Sanctuary and Rehab Center (or something small like the one in Destin FL), release the well and keep those who cannot be released. Y'all are perfect for it! Y'all already work at home and your little girl could grow up with all those animals around her and all the knowledge and know how would be awesome actually for all of y'all! I apologize for the long letter but I hope it give y'all some insight and guideance on what and how y'all want to pursue this new journey y'all are going to tackle. Please reach out anytime I give you my word I will help anyway that I can. All you have to do is let me know. I am 48 a college honor student with one year left, majoring in liberal art and creative writing.
